Course Description

The Innovative Design Program is for students who are looking to enter the Digital Manufacturing and Gaming Industries to become Architects, Designers, Builders, Gamers, Landscapers, Makers and Engineers.

Utilizing modeling software and working with the latest technology, students will learn how to explore ideas, create plans and bring their ideas and drawings from two-dimensional documents to 3D models.

Digital manufacturing is the use of an integrated, computer-based system comprised of simulation, three dimensional (3D) visualization, analytics and various collaboration tools to create products. Manufacturing has moved from manual mills and lathes to computerized numerical control equipment and 3D printers. Today's manufacturers, whether they are making cars, airplanes, or iPhone parts, are looking for engineers, designers, machinists and computer programmers.

Game design is one of the most exciting and competitive careers in the world. For people with a passion for technology and interactive entertainment, video game design is a dream job, but even those with a slight interest in video games would jump at the opportunity to become a member of this fascinating industry.

Game Designers use a combination of technology, science, engineering, mathematics, design, art, and animation skills to create realistic action packed video games. In addition to the Entertainment Industry, game designers create interactive games for the Mobile Technology Industry, education, advertising and marketing, web design, and many other businesses.

Lawrence Ruell (LJ)

Innovative Design Teacher

Hi! My name is LJ, and I am the Innovative Design Teacher. Before coming to CTE, I was a product manager for media and newsrooms. I studied at Wentworth, where I received my Bachelor of Architectural Engineering, and then completed my education at MassArt, where I received my MFA in Video and Digital Arts. I earned my CSM - Scrum Master Certification and have been in the field for over 20 years. What drew me in was the idea of working locally and contributing to the community. The best part of my program is helping students gain self-confidence, become successful artists, and technologists. A fun fact about me is that I had the first successful Kickstarter in the world, and I was the answer to a question on a British Jeopardy-styled show because of it.
