John Lasseter, Ph.DComputer Technology TeacherI have been involved with one aspect of computing or another for 30 years, first as a computer repair technician and support specialist, later as a software engineer and academic computer scientist. At the University of Oregon, I completed graduate degrees in Computer Science, a Master's degree in 1998 and Ph.D. in 2006. I was a professor in college computer science departments for nearly 15 years after that, teaching college courses in math and CS and conducting research in software engineering, programming language design, and computer science education. In January 2020, I decided to leave academia in order to join the faculty at TST BOCES as the Computer Technology teacher, and despite the chaos of this past year, I have never looked back. Every day, I enjoy the chance to work with young people and know that what I do and what I teach them makes a positive difference in their lives. Outside of my work, I have the extraordinary good luck of a family whom I love. I am a serious musician and composer, enjoy landscape photography, cooking, and building things. I love outdoor adventures such as trail running, hiking, and backpacking. Since 2011, I have been a volunteer backpack trip leader for the Sierra Club's National Outings group.

"I’ve been involved with TST BOCES for many years and I continue to find the engagement with the students, staff, and faculty highly energizing. I have participated in the mock interview event which allowed me to meet and interact with these amazing students and, hopefully, help them understand how to prepare for future professional interviews. Not only was I able to interact with them through this event, but I was also lucky enough to be in a position to host many students as computer technology interns. I can tell you that my team members and I got just as much out of it as the students did, maybe even more. The students were professional and full of questions and an eagerness to learn as well as ideas and thoughts on how to make improvements. I’m grateful to TST BOCES for allowing me to work with and engage with such wonderful people. I look forward to continuing to do so for as long as they’ll continue to have me!"

"I had previous computer technology experience working for my father and wanted the opportunity to develop skills to further that into a career. The Computer Technology program at BOCES, provided a blend of textbook courses, technical training, an internship at Cornell, and a Cisco Certification. I would absolutely recommend the BOCES Computer Technology program to anyone looking to learn how to solve real world IT problems!"

"I started attending Computer Technology in 11th grade, and I just thought the concept of working on computers physically was interesting as it was different from my normal academic work from my home district. I continued into the Cybersecurity program for my senior year since I enjoyed Computer Technology, and I wanted to be around familiar faces everyday. I've become more confident in my abilities from Computer Technology - enough to open up and work on my $1,500 laptop. (For anyone who has a device of that price, you know the feeling of fear that you might mess something up or damage it.) I think that the skills I've learned from both Computer Technology and the ones I'm working on in Cybersecurity will benefit me in my preferred career path going into the physical side of I.T. I believe the class is great for anyone of any level of experience in working with computers physically or on the software level. Even if you don't go into I.T as a field, knowing the common ways people can try to crack your passwords and how to fix basic problems on computers is always a great life skill in our rapidly digitizing world."
